Lotus 8
Authentic Chinese Cuisine with a Modern Twist
Lotus
The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. Untouched by the impurity, lotus signifies the purity of heart and mind and its flower represents long life, health, honor and good luck. Traditionally, the lotus flower is often symbolized with 8 petals.
8
The number Eight is an important number in many cultures and religions.
In China, 8 is considered a lucky number because it pronounced similarly to the word “prosperity” (發; fā). The number Eight (八 hachi) is also considered a lucky number in Japanese culture, but the reason is different from that in Chinese culture. 8 gives an idea of growing prosperously, because the character (八) broadens gradually.
In Buddhist tradition, the number Eight means completion. In Taoism, Bagua, an ancient symbol with 8 sides, represents the forces in the phenomenal world. The Egyptians believe that 8 is the number of balance and equilibrium. In Hebrew history, 8 is perfect intelligence. In Hinduism, 8 is the number of wealth and abundance. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday that starts on the 25th day of Kislev.
